CLASS CONTENT

  • Birth preparation for all births from water-birth to caesarean. (Including the natural stages and momentum of labour and birth, as well as inductions and pain relief options from epidurals to aromatherapy and water).

  • Good body awareness for labour: relaxation, positioning and breathing techniques. (To enhance confidence and adaptability, plus information on related disciplines). See signposts

  • Local information on maternity care and parent and baby activities. (Includes information on the John Radcliffe Hospital, home or cottage hospital births, the care available, and that on offer from the G.P’s, midwives and health visitors. Also information on drop-in centres, and activities and meeting places for new parents in and around Oxford.

  • Infant feeding and care, and life as new parents. (Includes breastfeeding, general feeding and sleep issues, baby bathing and nappy changing, and adjustment to life as new parents).

  • A chance to socialise with other parents and to meet up after the births. (An important part of the classes, especially as so many people are living far from home and family)

  • A typical course consists of five or six evening sessions starting at 7:30 pm, and an extra women’s session for the mothers – the time to be decided with the class.

  • Classes are just under two hours with a tea break.

  • The average price for a course is £185 per couple (inclusive of women’s session). Reductions can be available for those on low incomes.

  • Private sessions are also available on request.

  • Single mothers are welcome to bring a friend or relative with them.
